De cómo el mayor éxito de Laura Branigan había sido publicado poco por un conocido cantante italiano.
Hoy viajamos hasta 1984. Tras su éxito con Branigan 2 y entre otros «How Am I Supposed to Live Without You«, Laura Branigan lanzaba su tercer álbum, que llevaba por nombre Self Control, como su primer sencillo.
Fue una de las primeras veces en las que el rodaje de un videoclip contaba con la mano de un ganador al Óscar. En este caso se trataba de William Fried, autor de Contra el imperio de la droga (The French Connection) (1971) o El Exorcista (1973). Estuvo nominado al mejor vídeo pop/rock femenino en los American Music Awards de 1985.
En cuanto al tema, llegó al número 4 del Billboard Hot 100 en EE. UU. y número 4 en Canadá y fue todo un éxito en Europa. Fue número 2 en el UK Singles Chart y número 1 en Austria, Finlandia, Suecia, Suiza y Alemania del Este.
A día de hoy seguimos escuchando muchísimo esta canción y la consideramos un clásico de los 80. Lo que no suele conocerse o recordarse es que «Self Control» no es inédita de Branigan, sino que había sido publicada ese mismo año por uno de sus compositores.
Hablamos de Raffaele Riefoli, más conocido como Raf. Nacido en Italia en 1959 se traslada a Londres a principios de los 80 para iniciar su carrera musical. Raf es su primer álbum de estudio y «Self Control» el single de lanzamiento. Compuesto junto a Giancarlo Bigazzi y Steve Piccolo se lanza poco antes de la versión de Branigan.
Alcanza el número 1 en Italia y Suiza, el número 2 en Alemania del Este o el 6 en España.
La razón de porqué la canción llega tan inmediamente a Branigan es debido a que Bigazzi, uno de los compositores ya mencionados, a su vez había colaborado en álbumes anteriores con ella y más concretamente en sus versiones de «Gloria» o «Ti Amo».
A lo largo de los años se han realizado más covers, como el de Ricky Martin en 1993 llevado al español, o el de Soraya Arnelas en 2006.
Comparando las escuchas a día de hoy de las versiones principales no queda duda de cuál ha resistido mejor al paso del tiempo.
