De cómo el primer e incombustible sencillo de Cyndi Lauper tenía en origen un mensaje completamente distinto.
Corría 1983. Cyndi Lauper (Nueva York, 1953) publicaba el sencillo que servía como antesala a su álbum debut She’s So Unusual y revolucionaba las listas de éxito de todo el mundo.
Se convertiría en un éxito desde el primer momento, llegando al número 2 del Billboard Hot 100 en EE. UU., donde conseguiría el disco de platino tras vender más de un millón de copias. Además llegaría al número 1 en multitud de países como Australia, Canadá, Chile, Irlanda, Israel, Nueva Zelanda y Noruega.
La canción fue nominada a dos premios Grammy y el videoclip fue nominado a siete de la MTV, llevándose el premio a mejor vídeo de una artista femenina.
Por su parte, She’s So Unusual llega al número 4 del Billboard Hot 200 y obtiene seis discos de platino tras vender más de seis millones de copias.
La carrera de Cyndi no habría hecho más que empezar, aunque lo cierto es que a día de hoy esta canción no deja de sonar. Sin embargo, lo que muchos desconocen es que «Girls Just Want to Have Fun» había sido compuesta en 1979. Su autor y primer intérprete es Robert Hazard (1948-2008), hijo de un cantante de ópera.
Con una base musical rockera uptempo en la que priman las guitarras en vez de los sintetizadores, Robert cuenta desde su perspectiva cómo según él, las mujeres solo quieren divertirse con él. Echando un vistazo a algunas de las estrofas podemos ver cómo el concepto original dista bastante de la versión popularizada.

Lo cierto es que nunca llegó a publicarse, por lo que no tenemos datos sobre su repecursión. Años después, Cyndi y su productor adaptaban la letra y el ritmo para convertirla en todo un himno.
Por último, te dejo con una comparación en las reproducciones de ambos temas. Aunque el de Robert Hazard no esté en plataformas de audio ya que se trata de una demo, no cabe duda de que apenas se conoce entre el público general.
