De cómo el one hit wonder de Tiffany ya había aparecido 20 años antes de la mano de otro grupo no tan conocido.
Hoy comenzamos nuestro viaje musical en 1987. Tiffany Renee Darwis, más conocida como Tiffany, que había empezado con 15 años su carrera musical, publicaba dos sencillos previos al lanzamiento de su álbum debut, de título homónino.
El primero, «Danny» pasó sin pena ni gloria, pero el que nos ocupa hoy; «I Think We’re Alone Now» catapultaba a la artista hasta lo más alto de las listas de éxito.
Llegó al número 1 del Billboard Hot 100 en EE. UU., en el que permaneció durante dos semanas. Hizo lo propio en Canadá; donde logró el disco de oro tras vender más de 50 000 copias y Reino Unido, donde alcanzó el número 1 del UK Singles Chart y fue oro tras vender más de 625 000.
Después llegaron tres sencillos más, que consiguieron que el álbum llegara a ser cuádruple platino en EE. UU. tras vender más de 4 millones de copias. Con 16 años, Tiffany se había convertido en la artista femenina más joven en tener un álbum número 1.
Vinieron más álbumes, y de hecho la artista sigue aún en activo a día de hoy, pero nunca ha logrado superar o acercarse al éxito de su debut.
Esta repercusión, sin embargo, no hubiera sido posible sin Ritchie Cordell, compositor de la pieza y sus intérpretes originales que la darían a conocer nada menos que en 1967.
Se trata de Tommy James & The Shondells, grupo de pop rock psicodélico formado en Michigan en 1964 y del que ya hablamos en esta entrada.
Tras éxitos como «Hanky Panky» llegaba la canción que nos ocupa hoy dentro del álbum de mismo título I Think We’re Alone Now.
Llegaron al número 4 del Billboard Hot 100 en EE. UU., 6 en Canadá, 7 en Nueva Zelanda y 8 en Sudáfrica.
Solo basta comparar las escuchas para darnos cuenta de qué versión es más conocida por el público general.

La banda publicaría poco después «Mony Mony«. Curiosamente, la reinterpretación de Billy Idol destronaría a Tiffany del número 1 en el Billboard Hot 100 de 1987.
«I Think We’re Alone Now», le llegaría a Tiffany a través de su productor y mánager. Al principio rechazó la idea de pleno, ya que consideraba que la canción no era ni lo suficientemente moderna ni con gancho. Cuando escuchó la nueva mezcla decidió enseñársela a unos amigos y al verles bailándola decidió grabarla.
Han habido varias reintepretaciones y todas ellas están disponibles en mi playlist. Las más destacables vienen de la mano de The Rubinoos (1977) o, más recientemente, del cantante principal de Green Day; Billie Joe Armstrong (2020).
